Thanksgiving Wines

Posted by staceyblacker

Choose the right wine to go with your Holiday feast: Here are a few of the typical Thanksgiving foods with their favorite suggestions ~

Ham / Pork:  Rose wines are a great choice because they are juicy and ripe and most have flavors of strawberries.  Don’t confuse a dry Rose with a White Zinfandel — they have nothing in common.  A good Rose is elegant and flavorful.  Hint: Try Rose of Cabernet from Summers Winery

Turkey:  The old standard deserves something with a little zip to it.  Gewurztraminer is a perfect companion for turkey because it spices up an otherwise bland meat.  Hint:  Try Covey Run Gewurztraminer       But for those of you who like a little butter with your turkey a Chardonnay may be more in order.  Hint:  Try JT Cellars Chardonnay for something inexpensive or Cuvaison Chardonnay if you’re looking for a splurge       Turkey also appreciates a good light red ~ Hint: Try Yamhill Pinot Noir

Roast:  For those who aren’t huge turkey fans and would rather have meat, a Zinfandel is a top choice.  Hint: Try Portrait of a Mutt Zinfandel from Mutt Lynch winery

Other Hints:

Chianti is a nice light red that will go with a variety of Thanksgiving foods.

Merlot is also a great, versatile - albeit misunderstood - wine that also goes with a multitude of foods.  Try Merlot Over & Play Dead from Mutt Lynch winery – one of our favorites.

Riesling doesn’t always have to be sticky sweet and goes with a myriad of foods - especially turkey & ham!  Try Peter Mertes Kabinett or O’Reilly’s Riesling

Remembering wines from Portugal

Posted by staceyblacker

Monte da Cal

Our latest find from Portugal is another full-bodied, deep red wine that tastes like it costs $15-$20 a bottle when, in reality, it runs less than $10 per bottle!  Amazing.  Made from three grapes you probably never heard of but should remember:  Aragones, Alfrocheiro & Alicante de Bouschet.  Very spicy nose with dense powerful flavors of dark plum, leading to bittersweet chocolate on the finish.  Try with juicy meats, full flavored pasta dishes and light cheeses.
Check out our ever-growing selection of Portuguese wines.  They’re delicious, well-made and priced extremely well.  You won’t be disappointed.  Also taking orders for amazing Port gift sets.  Stop by & check ‘em out!

Allagash Hugh Malone

Posted by staceyblacker

Allagash Hugh Malone

Hugh Malone Ale’s base includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness.  To give Hugh Malone its hop character they use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process.  During secondary fermentation in the conditioning tanks, the beer is dry-hopped, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit.  This 8.5% abv ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness.  It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish.

Utopias from Sam Adams

Utopias from Sam Adams

Truly the epitome of brewing’s two thousand year evolution, Samuel Adams Utopias offers a flavor not just unlike any other beer but unlike any other beverage in the world.  It’s warm, sweet flavor is richly highlighted with hints of vanilla, oak and caramel.  With an alcohol content of 27% by volume, its complexity and sweet, malty flavor is reminiscent of a deep, rich vintage Port, fine Cognac or aged sherry while being surprisingly light on the palate.  And like the world’s finest after dinner drinks, Samuel Adams Utopias is not carbonated and should be served at room temperature.

Usually virtually impossible to attain, the rumor mill has let us in on the secret that there may be some extra Utopias this season.  For those of you who have always wanted to try it, reply to this e-mail & reserve yours now.

Calem Tawny Porto “Old Friends”

OK, so we all know that Port is fortified wine, right?  When a Port is described as Tawny, without an indication of age, it is a basic blend of wood aged port that has spent at least seven years in barrels.  Calem Tawny Port has flavors of nuts and wood.  In the mouth it is velvety, fruity and balanced. And it is a fabulous buy — under $15 a bottle, which is amazing.   Ideal with fruits and cakes.  So far, this week is turning out to be QUITE a Port week.  Grab a bottle for Friday night, make a nice fire and c-h-i-l-l.

Mutt Lynch Wines are Back!

Posted by staceyblacker

Dragon’s Milk from New Holland Brewing Company

From their “High Gravity Series” comes Dragon’s Milk.  At 9% abv you should expect a complex ale with a soft, rich caramel-malt character intermingled with deep vanilla tones; all dancing in an oak bath.  Unmistakably distinctive and hauntingly remarkable, Dragon’s Milk is a perfect example of New Holland’s Art in Fermentation.

Mutt Lynch wines back in NJ

Portrait of a Mutt Zinfandel, Merlot Over & Play Dead, Unleashed Chardonnay and the addition of new wines Fou Fou le Blanc and Chateau d’Og Cabernet Sauvignon made their way back to NJ and the shelves of Red, White & Brew.  We have always loved the Mutt Lynch wines but since they have been in between distributors, we have been without for far too long.  NO MORE.  Our favorite “critter wines” are back!  You MUST try the Fou Fou le Blanc ~ a Sauvignon Blanc with a certain panache!  Here’s the BEST part . . . and we still cannot get over this . . . the wines have all DROPPED in PRICE by $4 a bottle!  In this economy it seems highly unlikely that anything or anyone could make a statement like that but Mutt Lynch IS DOING IT!  Love it!  Mutt Lynch wines — all priced for everyday enjoyment — $13.99 a bottle.

In a Word? Pumking

Posted by staceyblacker

Red, White & Brew gets some extra PumKing

Pumking is an ode to Puca, a creature of Celtic folklore who is both feared and respected by those who believe in it.  Brewed in the spirit of All Hallows Eve, a time of year when spirits can make contact with the physical worldand when magic is most potent.  Pour Pumking in to a goblet and allow its alluring spirit to overflow.  As spicy aromas present themselves, let its deep copper color entrance you as your journey into this mystical brew has just begun.  As the first drops touch your tongue a magical spell will bewitch your taste buds making it difficult to escape.  This beer is brewed with pagan spirit yet should be enjoyed with its 9% abv.  And while other stores are begging to get this beer or had it MONTHS ago, we were smart enough to save it ’til now.  What better a time to enjoy a pumpkin beer that in the actual Fall!
