Gaujal de Saint Bon Picpoul
From the Languedoc-Roussillon area comes our favorite Mother/Daughter wine-making team. Picpoul de Pinet is a relatively small sub-appellation within the Coteaux de Languedoc. Like some other Mediterranean whites, Picpoul thrives in the hot climate and holds its acidity and freshness well. In fact, the name Picpoul is derived from the French words "picque", meaning sharp and "poul" meaning lip -- "lip stinger".
Domaine Gaujal de Saint Bon is a small estate-bottled operation run with extreme diligence by the Mother/Daughter team, Simone & Virginie Gaujal. They are proud defenders of Picpoul, an endeavor to make the finest and truest expressions of the variety in the apellation.
The nose evokes aromas of fresh cut melons, citrus hay & minerals. The palate is broad but with good acid, its delicacy revealed after some exposure to air. Real character, a low price and an amazing value.

Kanonkop Kadette
For those of you who aren't familiar with the grape Pinotage it is South Africa's cloning of Cinsault & Pinot Noir and has yielded a wine of good distinction and friendly fruit. It's funny -- 10 years ago we couldn't give away Pinotage but the winemakers down there have fine tuned the wine into something smashing. Now you can consider the wine the Zinfandel of South Africa. Pinotage is also successfully grown in New Zealand and some other parts fof the world.
Kanonkop Kadette is actually only 50% Pinotage (with the other 50% being a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Cabernet Franc) but we think it's a great representation of how a true Pinotage should taste.

Mutt Lynch Wines
The Mutt Lynch Winery in Healdsburg, CA is one of our favorites. Winemaker and all around hip gal, Brenda Lynch, not only makes some delicious award winning wines but she also gives some of her proceedes to animal charities - which we just LOVE. Try her Portrait of a Mutt Zinfandel (just because I'm not pedigreed doesn't mean I'm not a good boy) with ripe berry flavors or her Unleashed Chardonnay which is a perfect summer quaffer.

One of our best little hidden gems! Casa Julia wines come from Chile and are delicious AND value driven!
The Merlot comes from the Rapel Valley. It has aromas of cherry fruit with chocolate undertones. In the mouth it expands into dark black cherry, plum, tar and cocoa. This earthy Merlot may be among the most complex and intense of Casa Julia's wines.

Sokol Blosser Evolution No. 9
In homage to their nine grape blend Evolution, Sokol Blosser Winery released their 13th annual bottling on September 9, 2009 (9/9/09). The wine, affectionately known as the release somewhere between the 12th & 14th edition, has officially been named the Lucky Edition, rather than the 13th.
With over 40 white varietals to choose from, nine different grapes made the luck of the draw for Evolution’s unique blend: Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, White Riesling, Semillon, Muscat Canelli, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sylvaner. The Lucky Edition is inviting with aromas of jasmine, orange blossoms, complex spices and tropical fruit followed by an array of pear, peach, lychee, and honey flavors. A complementary pairing to foods such as Thai, Indian, Mexican and Caribbean, this wine is just as delicious served on its own.
Each rendition of Evolution has its own subtle and fresh personality, and annual production has grown every year since its introduction. So for the Sokol Blosser family and their team, Evolution was the polar opposite of the number 13, the harbinger of misfortune, as this special blend brings good luck to all who drink it.
